The program for the Picasso year, which will be held in 2023, is already prepared. The recently deceased José Guirao worked on it during the last months of his life and the witness has passed to Carlos Alberdi as commissioner for the celebration of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of the painter from Malaga.
The exhibition itinerary is a concatenation of proposals that run through the great Spanish museums: from the Thyssen Bornemisza to the Prado Museum, from the Reina Sofía Art Center to the Guggenheim, from the Barcelona Picasso Museum to the Casa Natal de Málaga, from the Fine Arts of A Coruña to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. There are a total of nearly 40 exhibitions, of which 16 take place in Spain and the rest in France and other locations, with the important involvement of the Picasso Museum in Paris. The events start in October this year.
This is a commitment of both governments that was closed at the Franco-Spanish Summit in Montauban in March 2021 with the creation of a specific bilateral Commission, made up of representatives of the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs of both countries and by Cécile Debray, the President of the National Picasso Museum in Paris, Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (president of the Almine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso Foundation for Art) acts as coordinator of the celebration for France, while the former Minister of Culture José Guirao, replaced after by Alberdi, he does it for Spain.
Dialogue is one of the characteristics of this programming. The relationship between Picasso and Chanel will be addressed at the Thyssen, between the painter and the dealer Daniel Henry Kahnweiler at the Picasso Museum Barcelona, between the man from Malaga and El Grego at the Prado Museum, or between the honored artist and Velázquez at the Casa de Velázquez, as well as the contrast with Miró at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona.
Body and matter, his last years, the echo of Picasso, or the sacred and the profane are other proposals to be developed by art centers and their curators.
Two academic conferences will also be organized, and a dissemination and educational program in which the administrations of Malaga, A Coruña, Madrid and Barcelona collaborate, cities linked especially to the life of the artist.
