After an eight-year battle marked by environmental concerns, regulatory hurdles, and rising costs, the Junta de Andalucía has granted final approval for a €350 million luxury hotel and residential project in Marbella. Backed by Platinum Estates, the development will transform the Las Dunas Club area into a world-class destination, combining five-star accommodations, upscale residences, and a preserved natural dune ecosystem.
Originally envisioned as a Marriott W resort with 186 rooms, the project has evolved into a higher-tier luxury brand, with rooms reduced to 150 to prioritize larger, more opulent spaces. The plan also includes 170 residential units, three restaurants, a beach club, and access to all hotel services for residents. Developers are also working to finalize road access from the A-7 motorway.
Environmental preservation has been central to the project. The developers have pledged to integrate the fragile dunes into a comprehensive landscaping plan, addressing a key condition set by the Junta. Despite earlier opposition from environmentalists and a temporary suspension in 2023 due to urban planning deficiencies, revised plans were approved in mid-2024, paving the way for final authorization.
The project has been in the works since 2016, facing delays due to Marbella’s overburdened planning department and legal disputes. With approval now secured, construction is expected to begin soon, promising a revitalized beachfront that combines luxury with ecological stewardship.
