The long-awaited Gran Parque de Mijas, set to become the largest green space on the Costa del Sol, is now 90% complete and on track to open to the public in May 2025. Eight years in the making, this ambitious project promises to be a transformative «green lung» for the region, offering a vast array of recreational and leisure facilities across its 27 hectares.

A Sustainable Vision Takes Shape
In its final stages, the park’s key features, including an amphitheatre, artificial lake, and central pavilion, are already visible. The upcoming phase focuses on the planting of 2,900 drought-resistant trees and shrubs, carefully chosen to reduce water consumption by 300% compared to the original plan. This sustainability-driven approach will ensure the park remains a thriving and eco-friendly space for generations to come.

Enhanced Access and Infrastructure
Spanning from the cemetery to the Cerros del Águila housing estate, the park’s location is just 1.5 kilometers from the town center. While initial plans included new bridges, the current phase has adapted existing roads to accommodate traffic. A parking area with 1,000 spaces has been constructed near the cemetery for convenient access.

An Investment in Leisure and Community
With a total investment of €27.5 million, the Gran Parque de Mijas will offer a variety of attractions, including:

  • Artificial lake with boating opportunities.
  • Amphitheatre for events, seating up to 1,500 people.
  • Splashpark for children’s water games.
  • Dog park, children’s playgrounds, and sports courts, including a skatepark.
Additional services such as zip lines, bicycle rentals, and a potential tourist train are being explored to enhance the park’s appeal.

Operational Plans and Revenue Generation
The park’s maintenance, projected to cost €3 million annually, will be partially offset by concessions for services like boat rentals and event hosting in the amphitheatre. These initiatives aim to balance operational costs while providing diverse activities for visitors.

A Grand Opening Awaits
With its combination of natural beauty, sustainability, and diverse recreational options, Gran Parque de Mijas is poised to become a beloved destination for residents and tourists alike. As the opening date approaches, anticipation continues to grow for what promises to be a landmark achievement on the Costa del Sol.
